Momentum Brewery

One of the newest NA breweries on the block, Momentum Brewery, has released their NA Golden and NA Hazy IPA, just in time for Dry January! Looking to capitalize on the momentum (pun intended) of the NA beer industry, founders Lars Dahlhaus and Wolfgang Menzel utilized decades of experience to bring two new, high-quality, non-alcoholic beers to the scene, with many more to come throughout 2024!

Dahlhaus and Menzel worked together when they ran “Schwelmer Beer Imports” between 2004 and 2008, and have been friends since. They partnered with Great South Bay Brewing in Long Island, NY to make Momentum possible and immediately began offering Momentum brews through Dahlhaus’ popular NA beer marketplace, ProofNoMore.com.

“With my 20+ years in the alcoholic beverage industry, launching brands across the country, and consulting many breweries, distilleries, and wineries on how to make it in the US market, it was a dream for me to do it for a brand that I own the majority of.” Dahlhaus said. “I connected with Alex Himburg, a German Craft Brewmaster with 20 years of experience and 5+ years brewing NA beers, to do a ton of R&D, and we discovered a never before used way to brew NA craft beer using classic ingredients, while being able to brew it on standard brewing equipment.”

He likened it to driving a stick-shift race car without ever using the brakes, going 200 miles at times and shifting down to 10. “It can be done,” as he notes. “But it requires nerves, knowledge, and a desire to break boundaries. The result is a never before seen complexity of actual beer flavors and tastes that you could usually only get from the esters during regular beer production.” He joked and said that the recipe is worth millions alone because of what they discovered!

As you may notice, Momentum’s Golden and Hazy IPA are not only in different sized cans, but they also have completely different vibes. The Hazy is black, tall, and sleek, while the Golden is a softer blue with an image of a surfboarder and a swimmer. Dahlhaus and Menzel wanted to deviate from the current state of the industry, in which the norm is for brands to target either the health and wellness crowd OR the bar-going drinkers, with no in between. The Hazy was designed with night-out social drinking in mind, while the Golden is the one you can take on any adventure. Both lines will be expanded upon through upcoming releases, which will include a Hefeweizen, Kölsch, Sour, and Fest-bier, so there will consistently be something for everyone!

Here are some reviews of the Momentum brews so far:

“Both have incredible flavor with relatively low calories which doesn’t hurt the waistline. A great beverage for after a workout, cutting the grass, or simply to wet your whistle. If you are looking for a non-alcoholic alternative with “real beer” flavor, this is definitely worth a try!” Bo Knows Zero

“We’re all impressed. It’s a golden but more flavorful than others in the category. Definitely picking up on some nice hops on this one. More hop action than most Blondes and Goldens we carry. Phenomenal. Crisp, right amount of hops, full bodied but light style.” – The team at Generation NA

“Many NA IPAs miss the mark in body and flavor, tasting thin, bready and bitter—not what I’m looking for when I want a beer. Momentum’s smooth-drinking hazy IPA nails the body while also delivering a dank flavor profile that rivals many full-strength IPAs.” Joshua M. Bernstein, journalist and author of The Complete Beer Course

“Fantastic options from Momentum Brewery! The Hazy has fantastic flavor right off the bat, goes down smooth, and has a lingering aftertaste that begs you to take another sip. They really nailed the Golden, too! Whether you are a live-for-Friday-night kind of person, or want to take some brews with you on your Sunday morning hike, Momentum’s got you covered!” – NA Brewskey
